Rachel Ann Dolezal is a civil rights activist and former Africana studies instructor. She was president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) chapter in Spokane, Washington until she resigned due to allegations of her true racial identity. For many years Rachel has been portraying to be black and I must admit she did a very good job at disguising her true identity. She also accomplished many great things such as becoming a civil rights leader, a teacher, an artist, and a hair stylist. However, that doesn't change the fact that what she did was NOT okay. Rachel has even taken it to the point where she has completely disowned her own birth parents( who are white) just to continue to this lie. How ridiculous is that? Something that completely caught me off guard was an article that I read concerning Rachel being discriminated ( as a white women) at Howard University. She claims that while attending the school, black students were favored more than she was; She even went as far as suing the university; Honestly, I actually believe that she did get discriminated while attending Hampton University. But, we as a black community get discriminated every day. So what's her point? If she felt as though she would possibly be discrimnated then maybe attending an HBCU was not the best choice. Discrimination is not right against any race, however, I believe Rachel took matters way too far. I totally understand that she wanted to be an activist for our black community, however she completely went about it the wrong way. I mean really, pretending to be black? Come on. Although many people don't see anything wrong with her actions, I on the other hand was very disappointed in her. I felt as though she used being African American to benefit her. She has no idea what it's like to TRULY be black and encountering the true struggles of being a black person; Pretending to be black won't change that.
"I felt very isolated with my identity virtually my entire life, that nobody really got it and that I really didn't have the personal agency to express it," she said. "I kind of imagined that maybe at some point (I'd have to) own it publicly and discuss this kind of complexity. (But) I wasn't expecting it to be thrust upon me right now, stated Rachel. I'm sorry, but she is NOT black just because she says she is or because she felt isolated ith her own identify(as a white woman). Clearly, there are some underlying personal issues that she needs to deal with before trying to idenitify as any other race other than her own.
